Resurrection Rolls

Resurrection Rolls

Every family has traditions whether they are intentional or not. These traditions are in a way a source of our identity. They illustrate a story of ourselves, our families and our beliefs.

When our families began to grow, we wanted to create some traditions that would help our kids understand and remember our faith, family, and culture. Creating some great memories is also a plus. Easter Sunday is just around the corner and our tradition for the past few years has been to celebrate by making resurrection rolls or empty tomb rolls with the kids.

Resurrection Rolls

We love these resurrection rolls because they are such a simple way for little ones to visualize Christ’s resurrection, the reason we celebrate Easter. As we lay the ingredients out, we explain what each component symbolizes.

The prepping of the resurrection rolls represents the burial of Jesus. The white marshmallow symbolizes Jesus’ body wrapped in clean linen cloth. Rolling the marshmallow in the butter then the cinnamon sugar symbolizes Jesus’ friends anointing the body with spices and oils (John 19:40).

Next, the marshmallow is wrapped in the crescent roll dough making sure that there are no holes in the dough. This represents the sealed tomb where Jesus was laid (Matth. 27: 59-60, 66).

The rolls are then placed inside muffin tins and baked in the oven. We explain to the kids that the baking time is like the three days Jesus’ body was in the tomb.

Finally, the fun part! After the rolls have cooled a bit, we cut one open to reveal that the marshmallow is no longer there, representing the empty tomb. Jesus is risen! (Matt. 28: 1-10)

Easter and spring represent rebirth and new life so to make our rolls cute, we decorated our resurrection rolls as baby chicks. The decorations were made out of melted colored chocolate.

The first time we made these rolls, the kids were amazed and delighted to find that the marshmallow had disappeared. We can only imagine how Jesus’ friends felt when they discovered the empty tomb. Easter is such an important and special holiday for us because it reminds us just how much God loves us. Jesus was perfect yet he came to Earth and gave up his life so that we (who are imperfect) might live forever with him in Heaven (John 3:16).

We hope you have a blessed Easter.
