Molang Cake Balls

Molang Cake Balls

Hi everyone! We apologize for the short hiatus. We have been busy working on a new project since September and we’re excited to share that with you soon.

We started a tradition a few years back when the kiddos were old enough to express interests/obsessions with things. The tradition was to make them birthday cakes or birthday desserts in the theme of their current obsession. We celebrated my youngest’s birthday back in September. This year, she requested her birthday dessert to resemble one of her current favorite cartoon characters; a chubby rabbit named Molang. The cartoon is really short and rather cute.

Rather than making a whole cake this year, we decided on cake balls (like cake pops minus the sticks). We’ve seen others make them and thought, “how hard could this be?” Boy were we in for a surprise!

There are 2 methods to making cake balls. The first is using a cake pop maker which basically cooks the cake dough into round balls. The second method requires cake that has been crumbled and frosting. The two ingredients are mixed together then shaped into balls. Since we don’t have a cake ball maker and needed ours to be shaped differently, we went the latter route.

Just to make things interesting, we decided to make 3 different flavors:

We simply used store bought white cake and frosting to make the cake balls and added in the appropriate ingredients for the different flavors. It was easy enough to combine the ingredients and form oval balls. After refrigerating them for a while to harden, we prepped our chocolate melts for dipping. Then the nightmare began.

First, we couldn’t get our chocolate melts to melt to the right consistency. Second, the cake balls were too cold and cause the chocolate to seize up when we dipped them. Then, we couldn’t figure out the best method to get the cake balls out of the chocolate without impaling them, poking holes or just having them completely fall apart. At this point we thought this project was worthy of being on the Netflix show “Nailed It”

Finally, we discovered that we could use a hotpot food ladle to dip the cake balls. They didn’t disintegrate and came out fully covered in chocolate. They weren’t perfect but we were able to work with them.

Then we got to do what we enjoy most, the decorating. We used some fondant to make Molang’s chicken friend Piu Piu and some accessories.

We had so much fun decorating that we decided to create a few scenes as if they were from the cartoon.

Serious props to people who can make beautifully smooth cake pops! They are way harder to make than they look. Maybe one day someone can show us the proper way to make these. In any case, they were delicious and the birthday girl was thrilled!

  • Adding oil to the chocolate helps it go on smooth. I don’t remember the exact recipe of what I used, but basically something similar to the texture of the chocolate which is used for chocolate covered strawberries work well.
